Yesterday’s Workout

MILES ACTUALLY RUN: 3.5 miles

TIME: 42:57

WHERE: to the end of LBI and back, through Beach Haven and Holgate

HOW’D IT FEEL? This run hurt my heart. There is still so much devastation left from Hurricane Sandy. I've been summering at LBI for over 25 years and my heart was breaking to see the houses of family, friends, and neighbors completely trashed.

 

Hiking the Giant Stairs

On Saturday the boyfriend and I ventured into New Jersey for a hike. I'm definitely not exactly the “outdoorsy” type. My version of an outdoor activity usually involves sitting on a patio and drinking a margarita – so let me tell you, this was WAY out of my comfort zone.

We drove over the GW Bridge and up the palisades parkway to the State Line Lookout in the Palisades Interstate Park.

“At 532 feet above the Hudson River, State Line Lookout sits atop the highest point on the New Jersey Palisades. The rock of the Palisades, called diabase, was formed underground by volcanic activity about 200 million years ago. Processes of erosion, including the glaciers of the Ice Ages, then uncovered the eastern edge of the buried diabase and shaped it into cliffs. (The name “Palisades” is from the resemblance of the vertical columns of diabase to a palisade-type fence made of upright posts.)”

The view was amazing!

From there we ventured down the cliff side, along the “Giant Stairs” and then back up to the top – a 520 foot ascent! The loop was a little over four miles and meant for experienced hikers, which obviously I am not. It ended up taking about 2.5 hours when it probably should have taken 2. We spent some time taking photos, eating snacks(grapes and vitamin water!), and sat for few minutes after I slipped and fell(and scared myself half to death because I almost went tumbling down the cliffside).

I had a really great time and I can't wait to try something like this again. I'm also super thankful that my boyfriend was willing to try something new(his version of outdoors involves golf clubs and beers), plus he was the navigator while we hiked. I would have probably gotten us lost in the woods forever.

I still can't believe I did this! Definitely the most exhilarating thing I've done in a long time.

 

I Ran 6.5 Miles Today…

And now I feel like a hungry, hungry hippo! I've been insatiable all day. I don't even know what's going to happen when I start running longer distances.

I feel like there's a good chance I'm going to put on a few pounds while I'm marathon training.
Right now I'm packing and then I'm off to the Jersey Shore for the next five days. My goal is to actually stay active on vacation. I want to run twice, swim and play tennis….very different than my usual sit-on-the-beach-and-drink style.
The true essentials: sneakers, flip flops, swim suits and booze!

Off To Philadelphia

Right now I'm on Amtrak to Philadelphia to see a comedy show. I picked up a few snacks for the ride from a new-to-me deli called Speedy's. Sparkling coconut water and a couple things from the salad bar(egg, chicken, mozzarella cheese and lettuce). Hopefully it's delicious!

Earlier today I tried to go for a run but it was just TOO FREAKING HOT. I'm a wimp and I can't run more than 10 feet without water(psychological issues lol) so it ended up being more of a walk/run/death march for 2.8 miles. Note to self: buy a handheld water bottle so you don't die of heatstroke!

On the upside, I did find a sunscreen that works for me. I'm such a baby about getting sunscreen in my eyes and having it burn, but this Aveeno stick was awesome! I got nice and sweaty and my eyeballs weren't on fire – success!

Okay, off to eat my snack and read a little before I arrive in Philly!
