Hiking the Giant Stairs

On Saturday the boyfriend and I ventured into New Jersey for a hike. I'm definitely not exactly the “outdoorsy” type. My version of an outdoor activity usually involves sitting on a patio and drinking a margarita – so let me tell you, this was WAY out of my comfort zone.

We drove over the GW Bridge and up the palisades parkway to the State Line Lookout in the Palisades Interstate Park.

“At 532 feet above the Hudson River, State Line Lookout sits atop the highest point on the New Jersey Palisades. The rock of the Palisades, called diabase, was formed underground by volcanic activity about 200 million years ago. Processes of erosion, including the glaciers of the Ice Ages, then uncovered the eastern edge of the buried diabase and shaped it into cliffs. (The name “Palisades” is from the resemblance of the vertical columns of diabase to a palisade-type fence made of upright posts.)”

The view was amazing!

From there we ventured down the cliff side, along the “Giant Stairs” and then back up to the top – a 520 foot ascent! The loop was a little over four miles and meant for experienced hikers, which obviously I am not. It ended up taking about 2.5 hours when it probably should have taken 2. We spent some time taking photos, eating snacks(grapes and vitamin water!), and sat for few minutes after I slipped and fell(and scared myself half to death because I almost went tumbling down the cliffside).

I had a really great time and I can't wait to try something like this again. I'm also super thankful that my boyfriend was willing to try something new(his version of outdoors involves golf clubs and beers), plus he was the navigator while we hiked. I would have probably gotten us lost in the woods forever.

I still can't believe I did this! Definitely the most exhilarating thing I've done in a long time.

More/Fitness Women’s Half Marathon Recap

I had planned on posting this yesterday, but in light of what happened in Boston, I decided it would be best to hold off.  As a I said yesterday, I am still deeply saddened by what happened and I’m keeping everyone in my prayers.

On Sunday I ran the More/Fitness Women’s Half Marathon.  I was completely unprepared.  I don’t think going on one five mile run since last fall really counts as training, but whatever.  My plan for the race was to run a bit, walk a bit, and basically just enjoy myself, since it was supposed to be a nice day in Central Park.

Obviously it was crowded at the start.  I’m usually in the last or second to last corral(yay for being super slow!), but somehow i ended up behind the race walker at the start.  So that was super fun – trying to dodge through ladies walking six abreast.  Not cool.

But anyway,I had a great time.  I ran until I was tired, then walked a bit, then ran some more.  Basically it was just a nice way to spend a few hours in the sun, getting some exercise and rocking out to Justin Beiber on my ipod.

AND Deena Kastor ran by me!  Girl is fast!  Also, she has my same Garmin watch.  We’re practically twins.

My next race is in five weeks, so hopefully I’ll actually run between now and then and be able to improve a little bit.
